HOW TO START TRAINING - A BEGINNER’S GUIDE

I remember the first time I “properly” committed to training. I had been doing my own thing here and there, no Coach or Personal Trainer eyeing my technique, no formal programming, no real routine. As exercise slowly progressed to being more of a habit and an essential part of my life, I heard about CrossFit. I was so intrigued and curious but at the same time, REALLY F**KING NERVOUS. I had been doing some stuff here and there, but this looked like a completely new world. The nerves were joined by self-doubt (what if I can’t do the movements, what if I can’t keep up?) and uncertainty but I’m pretty lucky because my curiosity rose above all and I decided to give it a go.
And here I am, eight years later! ;)
Your story may be completely different from mine. Maybe you’ve never done any exercise before and you’re wondering how to start. Maybe you previously exercised, regularly played or competed in sports, but it’s been years and you’re not sure how to even begin again.
Regardless, you’ll need one thing before anything else - the right attitude.
It doesn’t matter what stage of life you’re in, your history or your goals, it just matters that you have a willingness to learn, adapt and grow. Having the right attitude will be one your main driving tools to success when it comes to making training and exercise a part of your lifestyle.

Talk to a professional
When it comes to your health and well being, it’s a good idea to get advice from a health professional. Let’s use CrossFit Contessa as the example (because, well, you’re reading our blog. 😜) Talking to one of the Coaches and telling us your background and goals will help us direct you to your next step, which could be one of the following…
Humans are a social bunch. Some people are more driven by accountability, find exercising with a group more fun, plus they meet friends along the way. You’ll be under the watchful eye of the coach, who will have already been given the heads up about your background, fitness level and goals. We will work with you in the class to find you the appropriate scaling options, as well as the right workout intensity to ensure you get the most out of the session.
Here at CrossFit Contessa, we have four full-time coaches that will assist you get started with your training! There are multiple advantages to doing PT sessions:
- One-on-one focus. Your coach’s attention will be on you the whole time.
- Personalised. Your coach will be able to tailor your program specifically for your goals.
- More feedback. Your coach will be able to give you plenty of feedback when it comes to technique and modifications. In turn, you can ask as many questions as you like to help you achieve your goals.
- Privacy. If you’re starting out a little self-conscious, you don’t need to worry about other people being in your session. Group classes will always be a judgment-free zone, however we understand that sometimes PT sessions can feel more “safe” and “comfortable”, when it’s just you and your Coach.

Getting started is one thing - you have plenty of help within Contessa to do that. We will put you on the right path to achieving your health and fitness goals. Then, all YOU have to do is keep turning up. Know that this journey is FOR LIFE - there will be ups and downs, but that’s what we’re here for as well. To check in on you (literally, it’s a huge part of our service!), to truly care about your well being, to push you, to guide you and to be there with you every step of the way.
